Getting a driving licence for a moped

You need a Category AM licence with the special condition 120 to drive a moped. You can get the licence once you have turned 15. You can also drive a moped with a category B licence i.e. licence for a passenger car. To drive a light quadricycle, you need a category AM/121 driving licence.

You can obtain a driving licence for a moped i.e. category AM/120 licence, by taking the following three steps:

1

Driving licence permit

To get a driving licence for a moped, you must apply for a driving licence permit . You can apply for the permit at the age of 14 at the earliest. The permit is valid for three years. The driving licence permit is the prerequisite for taking a driving examination. You should apply for it in good time before booking a time for the theory test.

2

Driving instruction

You can attend driving instruction either at a driving school or under a driving instructor permit or with a combination of the two. You can attend driving instruction before applying for a driving licence permit if you are a student of a driving school or your instructor has been granted a driving instruction permit and you have turned 15.

Please note that when driving a moped, you must use a helmet that is approved for road traffic use. The helmet must be properly fastened and you must use driving glasses (if there is not a visor on the helmet) and protective, safety enhancing clothing. This includes an intact long-sleeved jacket and trousers, which are made of a material that is abrasion resistant. For example, sweatshirts/sweatpants, tracksuits, shell suits or leggings are not suitable clothes if they are not separately approved for road traffic use. In addition, you must use sturdy and solid footwear.

These protective equipment must always be used when driving a moped, during the driving instruction on the road and when taking a driving examination. Using the appropriate equipment is a requirement for taking the test.

The driving instruction for a moped includes a 4-hour Training for candidates for first driving licences (EAS) unless you already have a driving licence for some other motor vehicle, such as a tractor or light quadricycle.

As of 1 July 2018, no driving instruction will be required for a driving examination; however, this is recommended for passing the examination. You may start practising riding a moped after you have turned 15. Riding a moped in road traffic requires versatile skills. See the ABC of driving skills website  for a list of skills you should manage to be a safe driver in traffic. See also the driver's general basic knowledge and familiarise yourself with learning materials available online.

3

Driving examination

The purpose of the driving examination is to ensure that you have command of the contents of driving instruction and are able to apply these in various traffic situations and environments, and are able to act as a responsible driver in traffic. The driving examination for a moped includes a theory and handling test.

You can take the theory test one month before turning 15. You must take with you the certificate of the Training for candidates for first driving licences (EAS) if you are getting your first driving licence. If you are a minor, you also need the signed consent of your guardian.

To take the handling test, you must have passed the theory test. You can take the handling test once you have turned 15.

We also recommend the use of protective gloves.

These protective equipment must always be used when driving a moped, during the driving instruction on the road and when taking a driving examination. Using the appropriate equipment is a requirement for taking the test.

Rights to drive provided by the AM licences

A moped licence (AM/120) is compulsory for anyone born in or after 1985. A driving licence is always required for driving a light quadricycle . Since 19 January 2013, having a driving licence for a moped (AM/120) no longer constitutes a right to drive light quadricycles; instead, driving a light quadricycle requires a separate licence (AM/121) or a driving licence for a passenger car, for instance.
