All new driving licences issued after 19 January 2013 are valid for a fixed period.
Driving licences are valid as follows:
- Passenger car, motorcycle, moped and tractor driving licences are valid for a period of 15 years at a time. Once you have passed your 65th birthday, your driving licence will be valid for maximum of 5 years at a time
- Lorry and buss/coach driving licences are valid for a period of 5 years at a time. Once you have passed your 68th birthday, your driving licence will be valid for a maximum of 2 years at a time.
We will send you a reminder letter when your driving licence is about to expire or you must take some other action in order to keep your driving licence valid.
Our letters are posted to the address in Finland that you have entered in the Population Information System. Letters are not sent out to Finnish citizens resident abroad.
Validity periods for old driving licences changed at the beginning of 2013
The entry into force of the Driving Licence Act on 19 January 2013 also changed the validity period of driving licences issued before the amendment.
Driving licences are valid until 18.1.2033 at the latest, even if they have a later expiry date.
