The validity periods of duplicates ordered for driving licences issued prior to 19 January 2013 changed on 1 November 2016. Previously, duplicates were valid until 18 January 2033 or until the driving licence holder turned 70.

Group 1: Passenger car, motorcycle, moped and tractor driving licences
Duplicates are issued for 15 years or until the holder turns 70. After the age of 65, the licence is issued for up to five years.
Group 2: Lorry and bus/coach driving licences
Duplicates are issued for five years or until the holder turns 70. After the age of 68, the licence is issued for up to two years.
If the licence complies with the maximum periods of validity (2, 5 or 15 years) specified in the act on driving licences (Ajokorttilaki), the duplicate is issued for the remaining time.
A duplicate licence is needed, if
- the name of the licence holder has changed
- the licence has been lost, stolen or destroyed
- the special conditions of the licence have changed
- the customer is applying for alcohol interlock-controlled driving rights from the police
- the licence category has been downgraded
