A category A1 driving licence can be upgraded to a category A2 driving licence at a minimum age of 18 and a category A2 driving licence can be upgraded to a category A driving licence at a minimum age of 20. If you have not previously had a category A2 driving licence, you may obtain a category A driving licence only by taking a driving examination once you turn 24.
A motorcycle driving licence can be upgraded to a higher motorcycle category
- through a driving instruction,
- by taking a handling test and a driving test or
- by taking a driving examination (a theory test, handling test and driving test).
Upgrading a category A1 driving licence to a category A2 driving licence
If you are at least 18 years old and you have a category A1 driving licence which is obtained at least two years earlier, you may upgrade your A1 driving licence to a A2 driving licence:
- Through driving instruction (7 hours, comprising 2 hours of theory instruction and 5 hours of driving instruction). The driving school will give you a certificate of the received driving instruction, which should be delivered to the Ajovarma service point together with your driving licence permit application (in this case you can not apply for a driving licence permit using Traficom’s e-Service). Instruction may not be given with a driving instruction permit.
or
- By taking a category A2 handling test and driving test. For this, you must apply for a driving licence permit at Traficom's service provider Ajovarma’s office (in this case you can not apply for a driving licence permit using Traficom’s e-Service).
If you wish to obtain a category A2 driving licence before having 2 years of driving experience, you must take a driving examination (a theory test, handling test and driving test). Also in this case, the minimum age of 18 applies.
If you have a category A1 driving licence and you would like to upgrade it directly to a category A driving licence, you must take a driving examination (a theory test, handling test and driving test). In this case, the minimum age is 24.
Upgrading a category A2 driving licence to a category A driving licence
If you are at least 20 years old and you have a category A2 driving licence which is obtained at least two years earlier, you may upgrade your A2 driving licence to a A driving licence:
- Through driving instruction (7 hours, comprising 2 hours of theory instruction and 5 hours of driving instruction). The driving school will give you a certificate of the received driving instruction, which should be delivered to the Ajovarma service point together with your driving licence permit application (in this case you can not apply for a driving licence permit using Traficom’s e-Service). Instruction may not be given with a driving instruction permit.
or
- Taking a category A handling test and driving test. For this, you must apply for a driving licence permit at Traficom’s service provider Ajovarma’s office (in this case you can not apply for a driving licence permit using Traficom’s e-Service).
You may also obtain a category A driving licence without having a separate driving experience by taking a driving examination (a theory test, handling test and driving test). In this case, the minimum age is 24. In this situation you can apply for a driving licence permit using Traficom’s e-Service or at Traficom’s service provider Ajovarma’s office.
Motorcycle training licence
Traficom may issue a training licence for driving a motorcycle in traffic for training purposes. A training licence may also be issued for upgrading a driving licence category if a driving examination is being taken. The practice takes place independently without a driving instructor. Read more about training licences.
Upgrading a driving licence
You can apply for a driving licence by taking a driving examination within Group 1 (AM/120, AM/121, T, A1, A2, A, B, BE) through Traficom's e-Services.
Using the services requires you to already have at least one Group 1 driving licence category and that you are applying for an upgrade specifically by taking a driving examination (a theory test, handling test and driving test).
If you have to submit any attachments for the upgrade (e.g. certificate of instruction) or if you want to upgrade your driving licence with a Group 2 right to drive, the upgrade must be made at an Ajovarma office (External link).
