Upgrading your driving licence category

If you wish, you can obtain new driving licence categories, i.e. upgrade your current driving licence. To upgrade a category, you need to apply for a driving licence permit, which you can do at Ajovarma or, if certain conditions are met, using Traficom's e-Services.

Upgrading a Group 1 driving licence

You can upgrade your driving licence by taking a driving examination within group 1 (AM/120, AM/121, T, A1, A2, A, B, BE) by applying for a driving licence permit using Traficom's e-Services. Using the services requires you to already have at least one group 1 driving licence category and no need to submit any attachments for the upgrade (medical report, certificate of instruction, new photographs). For more about the conditions for using the upgrading service, visit Traficom's e-Services. (External link)

You can also manage your issues at an Ajovarma (External link)office if you like, or if you are not entitled to use the service based on the above conditions.

See here for more information on the alternatives for upgrading a motorcycle licence, i.e. the A categories .

Upgrading a Group 2 driving licence

You can upgrade a group 2 (C1, C, C1E, CE, D1, D, D1E, DE) driving licence by taking a driving examination with the group 1 or group 2 driving licence categories by applying for a driving licence permit using Traficom's e-Services. Using the services requires you to already have at least one Group 2 driving licence category and no need to submit any attachments for the upgrade (medical report, certificate of instruction, examination certificate, new photographs). For more about the conditions for using the upgrading service, visit Traficom's e-Services. (External link)

You can also manage your issues at an Ajovarma office if you like, or if you are not entitled to use the service based on the above conditions.

Upgrading a group 1 driving licence to group 2

If you would like to upgrade your group 1 driving licence category with a group 2 right to drive, the upgrade must be made at an Ajovarma (External link)office by applying for a driving licence permit. Applicants must submit a medical report on their driving ability in connection with the application unless

  • they are applying for an upgrade based on a valid examination certificate issued by the defence forces (see below for more information), or
  • they have submitted a group 2 medical report for a taxi driver permit or driving instructor's licence within a period of less than 5 years and the permit is still valid when the person applies for a driving licence permit for upgrading the right to drive from group 1 to group 2.

Exchanging a driving permit issued by the defence forces for a driving licence

A driving permit for a lorry, bus or motorcycle obtained during the military service must be exchanged for a normal driving licence in civilian life after the service ends. A category A right to drive granted by the defence forces may only be exchanged for a category A1 or A2 driving licence in civilian life.

The exchange must be made as an upgrade to the driving licence category at Ajovarma (External link). You must apply for a driving licence permit and attach the examination certificate issued by the armed forces to your application.

The examination certificate issued by the defence forces is valid for 3 years. If the period of validity of the certificate has expired, you must submit a medical report for the upgrade from group 1 to group 2 and take a driving examination to restore the right to drive issued by the defence forces.
