Upgrading your driving licence category
If you wish, you can get more driving licence categories by upgrading your driving licence. Upgrading requires a driving licence permit which you can apply for in Traficom’s electronic service or at a Traficom’s service provider Ajovarma’s service point.

You can apply for a driving licence permit in the Upgrade a driving licence service when the prerequisites for using the service are met. The general prerequisites for using the service include, among other things, the availability of a face photo and an up-to-date signature in electronic form

Upgrading a driving licence at Ajovarma
You can always upgrade your driving licence at a Traficom’s service provider Ajovarma's service point (External link), if the prerequisites for upgrading a driving license in accordance with the law are met.
Visit Ajovarma when the use of the electronic service is not possible due to the terms and conditions of the service, a technical issue or other reason.

A driving permit for a lorry, bus or motorcycle obtained during military service must be added to a normal driving licence after the service ends if you wish to utilise it in civilian life.
Adding a driving licence permit received in military service to a driving licence can be done only at a Traficom’s service provider Ajovarma’s service point. Attach the examination certificate issued by the Defence Forces to your driving licence permit application.The application is fulfilled at the service point.
The examination certificate issued by the Defence Forces is valid for 3 years.
You do not need to provide a medical certificate for the application if you fulfil the application while your examination certificate is still valid. If the period of validity of the certificate has expired, you must submit a medical report regarding your fitness to drive and complete the driving examination.
A category A driving permit granted by the Defence Forces may only be exchanged for a category A1 or A2 driving licence.
