Driving examination

Driving examination

The goal of the driving examination

The purpose of the driving examination is to ensure that you have command of the contents of driving instruction and are able to apply these in various traffic situations and environments. After taking the driving examination, you will be able to act as a responsible driver in traffic.

Conditions for taking a driving examination

The driving examination is taken at an Ajovarma office.

The driving examination comprises a theory and driving test. Some categories also include a handling test, which may be included in the driving test or taken separately.

Theory test

The purpose of the theory test of the driving examination is to ensure that you have sufficient knowledge and competence to act as a responsible driver in traffic. A passed theory test is valid for one year.
You may take the theory test one month before fulfilling the age requirement if a handling test or driving test is also required for completing the driving examination.

Driving test

The objective of the driving test in the driving examination is to ensure that the person applying for a driving licence, or the candidate, is a responsible driver who takes into account safety, a sociable attitude and an ecological driving technique. The candidate must be able to identify hazards and assess risks as well as their own behaviour and its effects on traffic safety.

Handling test

The handling test of the driving examination is used to ensure that you have sufficient skills in handling a vehicle. In some categories, handling tasks are performed while driving in traffic and in others before driving in traffic, as part of the driving test.

  • In category B, i.e. in the examination for a driving licence for a passenger car, handling tasks are performed in a genuine traffic situation while driving in traffic.
  • In category AM/120, i.e. in the examination for a driving licence for a moped, you must take a handling test.
  • In category AM/121, i.e. in the examination for a driving licence for a light quadricycle, handling tasks are performed in a genuine traffic situation while driving in traffic.
  • In the examination for a driving licence for a motorcycle, you must take a separate handling test before the driving test (see video  on the topic).
  • In category C, i.e. in the examination for a driving licence for a lorry, handling tasks are performed while driving in traffic.
  • In category D, i.e. in the examination for a driving licence for a bus, handling tasks are performed while driving in traffic.
  • In categories C1E and CE, the examination also includes a handling test in addition to the theoretical and driving test, and this must be taken before the driving test.
  • In categories D1E and DE, the examination also includes a handling test in addition to the theoretical and driving test, and this must be taken before the driving test.
